This book introduces the student, and others with a basic understanding of economics, to the student and other discipline of institutional economics. The central tenet of this discipline is that a modern economy is a complex, evolving system whose effectiveness in meeting diverse and changing human purposes depends on rules which constrain Possibly opportunistic human behaviour (we call these rules instititions).
Institutions protect individual spheres of freedom, help to avoid or mitigate conflicts, and enhance the division of labour and knowledge, thereby promoting prosperity. Indeed, the rules that govern human interaction are so decisive for economic growth that the very survival and prosperity of humankind, whose numbers are bound to increase for some time yet, depend on the right institutions and the fundamental human values that underpin them.
Institutional economics differs greatly from modern neoclassical economics, which is based on narrow assumptions about rationality and knowledge and which implicitly assumes the institutions as given. Institutional economics has important connections with jurisprudence, politics, sociology, anthropology, history, organisation science, management and moral philosophy.
Because institutional economics is open to intellectual influences from a wide range of social sciences, this book recommends itself not only to the economist interested in economic growth, innovation, development, comparative economic systems and political economy, but also to students of these disciplines.
