This book advances a framework, a process, and compositional approaches for designing a qualitative or quantitative research study in the human and social sciences. With increased interest and use of qualitative research and with unclarity about its distinctive attributes from more traditional forms of research, this book offers a unique comparison of qualitative and quantitative approaches in the research process.
This process includes deciding on a paradigm, using literature, writing an introduction, stating a purpose for the study, identifying research questions and hypotheses, using theory) defining, delimiting, and stating the significance of the study, and advancing methods and procedures for data collection and analysis.
This book provides the basis for deciding whether to use a qualitative or quantitative approach for the design of a research study and how to write up the results of a study for a journal article or dissertation. Addressing these issues, the author offers a guide to the major design decisions, such as deciding upon a paradigm, stating the purpose of the study, identifying the research questions and hypotheses, using theory and defining and stating the significance of the study.
Finally, designing a study is a difficult and time-consuming process. This book will not necessarily make the process easier, but it should provide comfort with the research process, enable one to better understand the paradigms in use, and explore the writing and composition process at work in scholarly research.
