Di Indonesia, perlindungan data pribadi termasuk ranah yang relatif baru dikenal masyarakat. Bahkan istilah perlindungan data pribadi masih dirasa asing bagi sebagian masyarakat.
Padahal, sebagai pengguna aktif internet, aspek perlindungan data pribadi merupakan hal yang esensial. Karena dengan melindungi data pribadi saat berselancar dunia maya, maka otomatis melindungi pribadi dalam kehidupan maya.
Ancaman yang perlu diantisipasi termasuk pencurian identitas. Pencurian identitas seringkali merugikan individu. Misalnya identitas yang dicuri dapat dipergunakan untuk melakukan pinjaman, kemudian tidak membayar.
Akibatnya, pemilik identitas dikejar oleh debt collector, atau nilai kelayakan kredit seseorang turun dan menghalangi orang tersebut mendapatkan pinjaman. Kemungkinan lain, pencurian identitas dapat menghalangi seseorang untuk mendapatkan fasilitas-fasilitas negara.
Privacy notice, atau sering juga disebut sebagai privacy policy yang disematkan pertama kali ketika seseorang mengakses suatu platform menjadi kunci penting bagaimana individu dapat menentukan perlakuan terhadap data mereka.
Secara sistem, beberapa data pengakses akan diketahui oleh platform yang diakses. Data apa saja yang dapat dilihat, digunakan untuk apa saja, bagaimana penggunaan data tersebut dan bagaimana platform melindungi data yang mereka himpun diatur dalam privacy notice. Maka penting untuk individu membaca dan memahami privacy notice ini, lalu memutuskan persetujuan mereka atas manajemen data yang telah disampaikan dalam privacy notice tersebut.
Di sisi lain, pemilik platform perlu mengedepankan aspek transparansi terhadap manajemen data yang mereka terapkan serta menggunakan bahasa yang sederhana, jelas dan mudah dimengerti pada privacy notice.
Kehadiran UU Perlindungan Data Diri (UU No. 27 Tahun 2022) telah lama ditunggu industri. Walaupun efektifitas undang-undang ini baru berlaku dua tahun kemudian, namun pergerakan di industri sudah mulai terlihat. Dua tahun masa peralihan ini dimaksudkan agar organisasi yang mengumpulkan data bersiap diri, termasuk mencadangkan budget, serta menyiapkan sistem.

Personal data protection regime in Indonesia is relatively new. Although Indonesian are active internet user, yet personal data protection still is considered alien in the ears of many. Personal data protection is essential to protect data an information of person when they surf the internet.
One of the most eminent risks in online activity is the personal identity theft, for it could interfere individual rights. For example, thieves of personal identity can use such data to be used in online credits and get away without paying a cent.
The owner of the identity will then be left with debt responsibility that they have never heard of. Failure to pay the debt will hurt the individual’s credit score that may hinder themselves when they apply for credit one day.
Other examples, personal data or information is used by the government to disburse some grants or programs. When the information is stollen, it may block the person to get the benefit of the programs or grants.
One of way for the people to mitigate the risk embed in online activities, is through privacy notice or some called as privacy policy. It usually pop-up the instant one open a platform; websites, or application. Privacy notice contained information on how the organization manage personal data and information they collected.
It is important for users to understand and decide whether user agree for their data to be managed as explain in the privacy notice. In another side, organization should strive to explain their data and information management program in such a way that are easy to understand by the public.
In Indonesia, the regime of personal data protection has been strengthened by the much-awaited Personal Data Protection Law (Law Number 27 Year of 2022). This law will be effective in the year 2024, giving organization to prepare to adhere to this law.
Such preparation includes, budgeting, and also creating internal system and management. Today there are some movements by industry to better manage their data management, yet much is still to be seen.
