15 Minutes Law Literacy – Ocean Sustainability in Relation to Controlling Climate Change
How does the ocean sector can contribute towards achieving Indonesia's ENDC targets?
The ocean sector can make a significant contribution towards achieving Indonesia's ENDC targets. This is because the ocean plays a vital role in regulating the climate. It can absorb up to 25% of the total carbon dioxide emissions and also capture 90% of the heat generated by carbon emissions.
Thus, the ocean is an incredible source of renewable energy – off-shore wind and ocean energy, derived from natural sources, such as wind, water, and tides, that do not emit carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. That means, using all of these sources can help achieve Indonesia's ENDC targets.
What are the benefits of the ocean?
- The ocean can serve as a rich source of both animal and vegetable protein, thus providing a significant food source. Additionally, there are bioactive components present in the ocean, which are active compounds found in functional foods that can have numerous health benefits. These components have been found to be useful as anti-cancer agents, antibiotics, and other such treatments.
- The ocean has the potential to serve as a source of energy, specifically through sea wave energy. This form of energy can be particularly beneficial for small, remote island communities.
- On the economic side, the ocean has potential as a source of income, for example in the tourism and transportation sectors.
What steps can we take to adjust to the consequences of climate change?
The efforts made can start with ourselves. For example, by saving electrical energy, choosing to use public transportation rather than private transportation, and no longer using single-use plastic because a lot of plastic waste is found in the sea which is one of the causes of global warming.
Then, after we have implemented the things above, this action can be continued by carrying out advocacy. Also, you can take an active part in environmental-based activities, such as mangrove planting and marine conservation.
Maritim Muda Nusantara has carried out marine conservation activities through its representative offices in each province. If colleagues have concerns in this area, they can contribute. For the latest information, visit the following website: https://maritimmuda.id. https://maritimmuda.id.
