15 Minutes Law Literacy: Understanding Digital Risks: Lessons from Singapore
In the South East Asia region, Singapore has put themselves as among the first to implement personal data protection in regards to digital transformation. As we know, digital transformation is inevitable.
Digitalization process inherently entails collection of users’ data, whether realized or not. This, however, open and heighten digital risk including fraud, identity theft, and child pornography.
So, the government of Singapore choose to control this phenomenon, through the personal data protection regime. Their main approach is to balance between innovation and personal data protection. In Singapore point of view, innovation can come through self-invention and through investment.
Hence, Singapore put a lot attention in country’s stability, including in terms of economic, political, and law enforcement. Moreover, the government of Singapore urge the public to elevate their digital literacy for them to be able to protect themselves in their online activities.
Among the latest issues in digitalization is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). To put it simply, AI is a lot of data gathered-namely:big data, that is utilized and read using statistics. Again, this data gathered by AI itself, or collect through any other means. For example, AI operates algorithms that helps us personalized our experience in a platform.
Hence, speaking of data collection and user’s profiling, it is the role of personal data protection regime to chime in. Not to get this wrong, personal data protection does not inherently forbid any use of data, yet it requires transparency and consent from Data Subject. Moreover data collectors (“controller”) need to manage data they collect with safety of the data in utmost priority.
